10/22/09 Two Days With College Programs For Coach Middlebrooks
Q: Why the road trip to UC Riverside?
A: It was important first and foremost for me to get out and visit one of my former players. As coaches, we tell our young people we love them but I think it is incredibly important to back that up with action. I visit all of my former players from Ribet as well as my pre-Ribet coaching years. Kyle is a great kid, great student and has become a great young man. I am looking forward to watching him lead his squad this season.
I also thought it was important to expand my network and spending time with the coaching staff at Riverside was a great opportunity. I think Jon Conley would be a great fit for their program. We had a great meeting and it looks like the coaching staff will be visiting Ribet to take part in a workout and watch Jon as well as our underclassmen. It was definitely worth the road trip.
Q: How did the workout with CSU Bakersfield go?
A: The workout went great. The coach from Bakersfield indicated he was pleased with what he saw and would be out this season to watch games and begin recruiting Jon. I felt all of the guys performed reasonably well, shooting 40%-60% in all drills and over 80% each at the free throw line. Those are the kind of numbers that will get the attention of college coaches.
Q: What’s up next?
A: Well we are taking a third straight day off for the football game. The guys will get in the gym and compete a little before taking off for the football game. We will get back to work Friday and then play Sylmar on Saturday to see where we are. Sylmar is one of the top programs in LA Section so it will be an interesting test for us. I like the way we are progressing and a stiff challenge like Sylmar should give us a little more insight into things we need to improve on. We are not focused on wins and losses during the pre-season, we just want to get better and expose our weaknesses so we can get in the gym and really work on those things.
