10/24/09 Frogs Basketball Practice Report
Fighting Frogs Men’s Basketball has logged their third consecutive Fall League win in big fashion with a 30+ point win over Sylmar High School. The Frogs are now 4-2 in Fall League, with wins over University, Reseda, Chatsworth, along with Sylmar. Impressively, Ribet is now 4-0 against LA City Section teams. Ribet losses came at the hands of Southern Section teams Burbank and Long Beach Cabrillo, both 5 points losses in which the team had the lead in the 2nd half in both games.
Coach Middlebrooks commented, “It is nice to win big but I am much more focused on how we won. We executed fairly well on defense and were able to accomplish a number of our defensive goals. Our transition game created a lot of easy baskets and we shared the ball much better than in our previous game against Reseda. We still have a lot of work to do on identifying open teammates a lot faster but I think that will come with time, so we are being patient right now to let guys settle in with assignments and execution of our transition early offense. The biggest challenge we have is not having 10 players on the team so we only get to practice our transition against full on defense in the actual Fall League games. What is interesting for me right now is we could just as easily be 6-0 against all large public school teams. We have spent a lot of energy trying to teach our guys how to win. We don’t want to just play the game but we want to do the things necessary to come out victorious. We never want to leave the court feeling like we should have won. We want to know that we gave it everything we have from our effort on the court to our preparation prior to facing off against an opponent. If nothing else, we want to be the hardest working program in high school basketball in the nation.”
The Frogs will spend the next couple of days in the weightroom and return to the gymnasium for practice on Wednesday, making room for two home volleyball games. "We will get in 3 good practices this week, which is good. Last week we only had 2 and the previous week we had none. I am hoping the rest will help with some minor injuries guys have. I think the days off has been good because time in the weightroom for us is critical to our program. We have gotten a lot stronger and we hope to continue that as we get closer to the regular season."
The Fighting Frogs have two remaining Fall League games, along with a scrimmage and alumni game before tipping off the season on December 4th against Environmental Charter at home in Ribet Gymnasium. “We are hoping for a full house at our opening home game,” added Coach Middlebrooks. “Fans in the stands really make a difference for us and we love giving them something to cheer about. I think everyone will be excited with our team this season as we attempt to represent Ribet well and make all our families and students proud to be FROGS!”
